Entrants must be aged 15 to 28 inclusive as at midnight Monday, March 31, 2008. There are two age categories for entries: 15-19 and 20-28 years of age.

The competition is open to UK & Republic of Ireland residents only. Employees of Telegraph Media Group Limited "The Telegraph", Bayer, The Royal Society , their subsidiaries or associated companies, advertising and promotional agencies and their families are not eligible to enter.

Entries must be approximately 700 words long.

Entries over 800 words in length will be disqualified. The article word count does not include any description of any graphic illustration, bibliography, nor cover page details for online entries.

Entries will not be returned..

Entries must be submitted with a completed entry form using either the online form or a printed entry form (which is available on the download entry pack page). Photocopies of the entry form are acceptable.
Online Entries should ensure their entry is in Microsoft Word format (filename.doc), and that the entry is accompanied by an Online Entry Form. Please also ensure that your email address appears on the top of each page you are submitting.

Postal Entries should be typed or legibly written in black ink or ballpoint, printed or written using only one side of each sheet of A4 sized paper, and be double-spaced. Your name should be clearly marked at the top right hand corner of every sheet of paper submitted.

If submitting an entry by post, two copies of both the article and the entry form should be submitted in an A4 envelope. Entries should be sent to: The Daily Telegraph and Bayer Science Writer Awards 2008, PO Box 5824, Westcliff on Sea SS1 9EW.

The first prize in each category consists of (i) your article published in The Daily Telegraph; (ii) Work placement at either The Daily Telegraph or Bayer; (iii) £1,000 cash; (iv) a year's subscription to Nature and New Scientist magazines.
The second prize in each category consists of (i) your article published in The Daily Telegraph; (ii) £500 cash; (iii) a year's subscription to Nature and New Scientist magazines.
Nine runners-up in each category will each win (i) £100.
All short listed entries in each age group will be invited to spend the day at The Daily Telegraph’s Central London office

The special Bayer School's Prize of £500 will be awarded to the school with the highest number of finalist entries, short-listed by the judges.
The special Teacher's Prize of £200 will be awarded to the teacher submitting the highest number of short-listed entries from his/her school, whether online, by post or a mix of both. Please ensure your pupils mark clearly on their entry forms that they are also submitting their articles for the School's and Teacher's Prizes section of the Awards.
The prizes as described are available on the dates of publication. Events may occur that render the competition itself or the awarding of prizes impossible due to reasons beyond the control of The Promoter and accordingly The Promoter may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the competition and the reader agrees that no liability shall attach to The Promoter as a result thereof.
Copyright in all entries submitted remains with the respective entrants but Telegraph Media Group Limited reserves the right to feature any or all of the submitted entries in any of its publications, on this Awards website and/or on its website www.telegraph.co.uk at any time without further payment to or consultation with the entrants. The individuals responsible for any entries so featured will be fully credited.
The author warrants that the science article created will be an original work and not a copy or substantial copy of any work nor will it have been previously published.
Proof of posting is not proof of delivery. Damaged, defaced, illegible or incomplete entries will be considered null and void. No responsibility can be accepted for any entries lost, delayed or damaged in the post.
The judges' decision is final and no correspondence on the nature of assessment or the results will be entered into. Winners will be announced in The Daily Telegraph and on this website.
Entrants may be asked to partake in publicity.
It is a condition of entry that all rules are accepted as final and that the competitor agrees to abide by these rules.
